overview

The PADS course is focused on exploring algorithmic expression in art. Creative code has opened up new possibilities for artists; we begin by juxtaposing traditional practices of analog drawing with the process of sketching in code. Technically, the course will introduce the fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context through the development of an online software sketchbook. The first five tutorials are based in Lingo (Director) the second five are based in Processing (Open shareware, Java API). Studio demonstrations will include: software that responds to environmental changes (temperature, oxygen, light), animations that change based on mouse input, software that draws from online data, and software that draws from a human heartbeat.

course requirements

• electronic sketchbook posted online with source code
• 1 weekly reading with occasional feedback assignment
• final project for exhibition(possibly refining one of your sketches)
